Electrical Safety Upgrades at a UK Quarry

Client

A national construction materials provider, with a technical facility undergoing upgrades to its electrical infrastructure, some elements of which dated back to the late 1950s.

The Challenge

Following an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR), multiple legacy issues were identified across the site’s electrical distribution infrastructure. Although none posed immediate risk, a total of 52 findings presented an opportunity to enhance safety and bring the system up to modern standards. Several components dated back as far as the late 1950s and were due for upgrade.

The Solution

A strategic upgrade plan was developed and implemented, targeting both compliance and long-term performance:

  • Remedial Works: All 52 findings were methodically addressed. Where possible, immediate fixes were implemented on-site, while more involved issues were scheduled into planned works.
  • Distribution Board Upgrades: Major upgrades were carried out across the technical building, replacing aged distribution boards and associated switchgear including busbars and fuses, aligning with current BS7671 standards.
  • AFDD Protection: Arc Fault Detection Devices were integrated into socket outlet circuits to significantly reduce fire risk and align with the latest regulatory guidance.
  • Safety & Compliance Measures: RCD protection (30mA) was installed where applicable. Load assessments and circuit derating were completed to ensure robust future performance. Asbestos precautions were followed during relevant interventions.

The Result

The upgraded electrical infrastructure now fully complies with the latest standards and significantly enhances the site’s safety posture. The completion was certified with an NICEIC certificate, and the works are backed by the NICEIC Platinum Promise and a 12-month warranty.

Benefits

  • Improved Safety: All non-compliant items were resolved, substantially improving safety for personnel and equipment.
  • Modernised Infrastructure: New boards and switchgear offer increased reliability and easier ongoing maintenance.
  • Proactive Risk Mitigation: Use of AFDD technology addresses emerging risks and supports regulatory best practices.
  • Assured Compliance: The facility meets all applicable legal, insurance, and regulatory obligations for electrical safety.
  • Operational Confidence: The client can now operate with renewed assurance in the resilience and reliability of its upgraded system.
