The Government has confirmed major updates to the UK’s EV charging grants and the headline news is significant:
Grant funding is increasing by over 40%. From £350 to £500 per socket from 1 April.
As part of the UK’s continued transition to electric vehicles, the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV) has announced changes to its home and workplace charging schemes for the 2026/27 financial year.
At Blaby Electrical, we’re ensuring homeowners, landlords, businesses, and schools across Leicestershire and the Midlands understand exactly:
- What’s increasing
- What’s ending
- What deadlines matter
- And how to secure the maximum funding available
Here’s what you need to know.
The Big Change: Home & Workplace Grants Increase to £500
From 1 April, the maximum grant for most home and workplace charge point installations increases:
- From £350 to £500 per socket
- Applies to eligible homeowners, renters, landlords, and businesses
- Based on updated scheme rules from the new financial year
That’s a £150 increase per socket, making 2026/27 one of the strongest funding years yet.
2026/27: The Final Year of the Current Grant Structure
The Government has confirmed this will be the final year of the current OZEV framework.
- Five grants extended for one final year (to 31 March 2027)
- Three grants permanently closing on 31 March 2026
- Grant rates changing from 1 April
- A new “Find a Grant” application platform launching
The overall aim is to simplify the system and streamline applications.
Home Charge Point Grants (Extended to 31 March 2027)
The following schemes continue for one final year:
- Flats & Renters Grant
- Residential Landlord Charge Point Grant
- Households with On-Street Parking Grant
Increased Grant Rate
From 1 April:
- Up to £500 per socket
If you applied before 1 April:
- You may claim £350 via the current system (until 26 May 2026), or
- Cancel and reapply through the new platform to access £500 (application will be reassessed)
Workplace Charging Grants (Extended to 31 March 2027)
The following workplace schemes continue:
- Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS)
- Workplace Charging Scheme for State-Funded Education Institutions
Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS)
From 1 April:
- Up to £500 per socket
- Installations completed before 1 April remain capped at £350
- Rate is determined by installation completion date, not application date
(This avoids needing to cancel and reapply vouchers.)
State-Funded Education Institutions
- Grant reduces from £2,500 to £2,000 per socket from 1 April
- Vouchers issued before 1 April remain valid at £2,500
- Must be redeemed by 30 September 2026
- New evidencing requirements now apply
Schools and academies should consider acting before April if they want to secure the higher rate.
Grants Permanently Closing – 31 March 2026
The following schemes will end:
- Staff & Fleets Grant
- Residential Landlord Infrastructure Grant
- Commercial Landlord Charge Point Grant
Key Deadlines
- 31 March 2026 – Final date to apply
- 26 May 2026 – Final date for installers to submit claims
- 6 July 2026 – Final date to resubmit claims (if further evidence requested)
There are roughly three months from the 25 February announcement to complete installations and submit claims under closing schemes.
If you’re eligible for one of these, early action is strongly advised.
New “Find a Grant” Platform (From 1 April)
Applications for certain schemes move to the Government’s new Find a Grant service.
Affected schemes:
- Flats & Renters
- Residential Landlord Charge Point Grants
What’s Changing?
- Customers must create a Find a Grant account
- Customers apply directly (installers no longer send application links)
- Installers do not need to register
- Claims submitted via digital form link
- Email updates replace live portal tracking
- Estimated assessment time: Up to 10 working days
Important: Installation must not begin until grant eligibility is confirmed.
Government Flexibility
OZEV reserves the right to amend or close grants. If changes occur:
- Around 4 weeks’ notice will be given
- Claims submitted before public announcements will be honoured (subject to criteria)
What This Means for You
Homeowners & Renters
The increase to £500 per socket makes this an ideal time to install.
Landlords
Review whether you’re affected by infrastructure or commercial landlord grants closing in March 2026.
Businesses
The £500 WCS support significantly improves ROI for workplace charging in 2026/27.
Schools & Education Providers
Applying before 1 April may secure the higher £2,500 rate.
